Why are we doing it?
Because it makes sense. Integrating the leading learning specification (xAPI) with a powerful content design application (Hype) is a no-brainer. It also means that for companies that already use, or are planning to use xAPI, Hype becomes an option. Hype's HTML exports fit easily into 'industry leading' authoring tools as web objects/iframes. Which means that no xAPI data will be lost.
Note from an instructional designer:
When I design a piece of compliance training, or a module within a larger unit of training, I try to find a moment where I can take the learner a little deeper into the training. For example, if I was designing training about the Great White Shark, I will teach learners about its habits, its breeding, migration, etc. But then I try to find a moment where I can take the learner into an actual shark cage in the open sea. All of a sudden the learning is not theoretical anymore, but experiential. Which means no learner will forget anything about a Great White Shark.
Not many of us have the time and budget to do all the shark training in a shark cage with Augmented Reality goggles that shows the learning data while they exeprience the sharks. It is more realistic to look for a moment or two where the learning can go deeper. A bit more interactive and closer to the skin. These are the moments that Hype shines, because it allows me to be more immersive than other tools. Hype does not tell you what to do and how to do it. It allows you the freedom to create whatever you want.
